چکیده

Morphodynamic equations governing the behaviour of active nematic fluids on deformable curved surfaces are constructed in large deformation limit. Emphasis is placed formulation objective rates that account for normal deformations whilst ensuring tangential flows Eulerian, and use surface derivative (rather than covariant derivative) free energy, which elastically couples local order to out-of-plane bending surface. Focusing geometry its dynamical interplay with hydrodynamics, several illustrative instabilities then characterised. These include cases where role Scriven-Love number analogue non-negligible, forcing can be characterised by an F\"{o}ppl-von-K\'{a}rm\'{a}n number. Motility of active fluid drops on surfaces.

Drops of active liquid crystal have recently shown the ability to self-propel, which was associated with topological defects in the orientation of active filaments [Sanchez et al., Nature 491, 431 (2013)]. Here, we study the onset and different aspects of motility of a three-dimensional drop of active fluid on a planar surface. We analyze theoretically how motility is affected by orientation pr...

Curvature generation in nematic surfaces.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in the study of shape formation using modern responsive materials that can be preprogrammed to undergo spatially inhomogeneous local deformations. In particular, nematic liquid crystalline solids offer exciting possibilities in this context. Considerable recent progress has been made in achieving a variety of shape transitions in thin sheets of ...

Nematic films and radially anisotropic Delaunay surfaces.

We develop a theory of axisymmetric surfaces minimizing a combination of surface tension and nematic elastic energies which may be suitable for describing simple film and bubble shapes. As a function of the elastic constant and the applied tension on the bubbles, we find the analogues of the unduloid, sphere, and nodoid in addition to other new surfaces.

Dynamic structure of active nematic shells

When a thin film of active, nematic microtubules and kinesin motor clusters is confined on the surface of a vesicle, four +1/2 topological defects oscillate in a periodic manner between tetrahedral and planar arrangements. Here a theoretical description of nematics, coupled to the relevant hydrodynamic equations, is presented here to explain the dynamics of active nematic shells. In extensile m...

Topology and dynamics of active nematic vesicles.

Engineering synthetic materials that mimic the remarkable complexity of living organisms is a fundamental challenge in science and technology. We studied the spatiotemporal patterns that emerge when an active nematic film of microtubules and molecular motors is encapsulated within a shape-changing lipid vesicle. Unlike in equilibrium systems, where defects are largely static structures, in acti...
